Here is a quick look at how successful the Jets have been running to various parts of the field. Stats were compiled by the NFL.
Location | Left End | Left Tackle | Left Guard | Middle | Right Guard | Right Tackle | Right End |
Plays | 10 | 8 | 18 | 35 | 12 | 14 | 14 |
Average | 7.8 | 5.75 | 4.33 | 3.97 | 3.67 | 2.11 | 6.36 |
NFL Rank | 5 | 7 | 13 | 18 | 17 | 30 | 6 |
Outside of runs to right tackle, it tells the story of an offense that is uniformly more successful the further outside the runs are.
These numbers square with my general perception of how the run game has worked so far. I think Chris Ivory has been the thing making the offense successful on the ground. A lot of these outside runs have been when Ivory has first looked up the middle, saw nothing, and bounced runs outside. The struggles the run game had in the game he missed is further evidence.
In any event, these are only the numbers for one quarter of the season. We will have to wait and see whether the numbers move at all as we get deeper into the autumn.
