Jets Training Camp: An Early Look at the Secondary

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

One day does not a depth chart make, but for the first day the Jets shed the first bit of light on whom might have a leg up to start in the secondary.

At safety the Jets trotted out the duo that started the opener last season.

Calvin Pryor also was getting a look with the first unit.

It's somewhat noteworthy that Pryor was not automatically getting a starting role. It figures he will play a prominent role. Some were even giving buzz about him potentially making the calls. Rex tends to like to throw his rookies on defense into the deep end of the pool so it will be interesting to see how the playing time is divided as we get deeper into camp.

Speaking of throwing rookies into the deep end of the pool, third round pick Dexter McDougle also got some playing time with the first team.

From what I gather, it sounds like McDougle had an uneven day that ended on a high note with a nice looking interception.

Dimitri Patterson also seemed to get first team reps.

Only time will tell whether these two only got the nod on the first day, and the extent to which the other players will get a shot with the first team. It might also be Patterson mano a mano with McDougle. It's possible the Jets could go with a very young secondary of Dee Milliner, Pryor, Allen, and McDougle.
