Rex Ryan on Eric Decker

Doug Pensinger

Rex Ryan talked about Eric Decker's role on offense today.

"Clearly, he is going to be a go-to guy," Ryan said. "We know what we're getting. This is going to be a guy that you can get him the ball in critical situations."

Much has been made over the question of whether Decker is a "true number one" receiver, whatever that is. For the amount of money the Jets are paying him, Decker will clearly be the top target on offense.

People question whether he's a product of Peyton Manning, but it kind of misses the point. What Manning does is find and distribute the ball to receivers who get open better than any quarterback in the league. A wideout posting the kind of numbers Decker did in Denver is doing a lot of things right. Size and crisp route running transfer into any offense.

Decker's production will not really be hindered by his own lack of ability. The question is whether the Jets will get quality play at quarterback and whether there is enough of a supporting cast to prevent teams from dedicating all their resources to taking Decker away.
