Marty Mornhinweg Sheds Some Light on QB Competition

Rich Schultz

The state of the Jets' competition at quarterback has been much speculated over the past few days. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg offered a bit of clarity.

"There is competition," Mornhinweg said Thursday on a conference call with season ticket holders. "Now it may not quite be like the competition we had last year where (it was) 50-50."

The Jets' preference is undoubtedly that Geno wins the competition. If he comes out and shows he is ready to take a big step forward, there is little Vick will be able to do to take the job.

Geno, however, is probably going to have to show he will eliminate the long stretches of inept play to fend Vick off, however. This is the way it should be. I really do not understand the big deal many are making of this. The entire idea of getting Vick is to force Geno to earn the job. Why does ever other unproven youngster need to earn his job, but it becomes a big deal when it happens at the most important position?
