New York Jets Sign Vernon Gholston

According to a press release this morning, the New York Jets have decided to sign Vernon Gholston. As you all know, Gholston was the sixth overall pick by the Jets in 2008, and is widely considered to be one of, if not the biggest, busts in team history. After leaving the Jets, he briefly played for the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams.

This is fascinating news, considering Gholston never once recorded a sack with the team that brought him in as a pass rushing specialist. In the release, GM John Idzik stressed, "He's cheap. Like really cheap. We're basically paying him in dryer lint." HC Rex Ryan added, "I can't give up on someone that played me for me, even if I never thought he'd be any good. Any player that has ever played for me will always have a home on one of my teams." Terry Bradway, the former GM of the team before Mike Tannenbaum and current Senior Director of College Scouting, noted, "I literally broke a table in half pounding for this guy. If we could redo the 2008 draft, I'd still take Vern every time."

Gholston has since posted on his Twitter account that he's stayed in shape by fighting former Jets backup Rob Turner weekly, stating that Turner once even got him to show emotion and care about anything other than his money.

Despite the news, and my stunned reaction, I still plan on supporting the move 100%. The more I think about it, the better signing this is than I initially thought. If anyone can turn Gholston around, it's Rex Ryan, and John Idzik is a genius for thinking of such an under-the-radar scrap heap move.
