Santonio Holmes Has Been Released

Al Bello

According to the New York Jets, wide receiver Santonio Holmes has been released.

The mercurial wide receiver had an amazing 2010 season with multiple game-winning catches and received a large contract over Braylon Edwards. After a disappointing 2011 season that resulted in him being benched against the Miami Dolphins, Holmes was injured early in 2012 and was injured often in 2013.

I think Holmes gets a bad rap from a lot of fans, because of his antagonistic relationship with the media. It's easy to forget his great 2010 season and how injured he was in 2012 and 2013. A lot of people give Mark Sanchez a pass for having bad wide receivers and a weak supporting cast in 2011 and 2012, but they don't give Holmes the same benefit for having a bad quarterback and no other weapons to take the pressure off him.

Ultimately, Holmes got paid too much and although we'll never forget the memories of 2010, it's time to see him go.

EDIT: This will increase the team's salary cap space from roughly $31 million to approximately $39 million.
