The Jets are speaking with free agent linebacker Calvin Pace about returning in 2014.
The Jets met with Pace’s representatives at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last week and are hoping to re-sign the outside linebacker, according to a source.
Pace had a career high 10 sacks, but I didn't think he was anywhere near as effective as that number would indicate. Multiple film studies I have seen along with my own review show that over half of those sacks were some combination of badly blown assignments, other defenders pushing the quarterback right into him, or coverage sacks rather than Pace winning his battles off the edge. Under the same circumstances, it probably would not be a stretch to say Garrett McIntyre, Antwan Barnes, or any number of players could have posted double digit sacks. Those circumstances are unlikely to repeat themselves, and it is unlikely that a 33 year old whose play had declined in the three previous seasons will be able to sustain that kind of play anyway. I think the Jets would probably be better off letting Pace walk and seeing whether they could get a compensatory pick for him.
I fully expect a deal to get done, though. If the Jets brought him back in 2013 after a subpar 2012, I'm sure the raw sack total will convince them to give him another go.
