His Cimininess reports on what Geno Smith is up to during the offseason.
Geno Smith prepared for the NFL scouting combine by working out with quarterback guru Chris Weinke at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. A year later, Smith is taking the same approach to his offseason.
The New York Jets' quarterback was seen Monday at IMG, working in a private session with Weinke, IMG's director of football operations.
Weinke had a career as a minor league baseball player and then returned to football with Florida State University in his late 20's. He won the Heisman Trophy and then had a largely unsuccessful seven year NFL career with the Panthers and 49ers. I'm not sure I've ever heard anybody describe him as a guru before, but he apparently does have something of a good reputation.
How much good will it do? It is tough to say. Some players can learn. Others can't. A lot of Geno's issues last year did seem to come as the result of his mechanics falling apart so hopefully Weinke can lead to some kind of improvement.
