Jets vs. Patriots Final Score: New England Wins 17-16

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets lost a heartbreaker on what was unofficially Rex Ryan Day at the Meadowlands. New England defeated Gang Green 17-16.

You can point to many reasons for the loss, but what probably sunk the Jets above all else was quarterback play. It seems fitting because that will probably go down as the biggest reason for the Rex Ryan Era ending. Geno Smith played stretches of very good ball today, but ultimately he made three mistakes to sink the Jets. He threw an interception on his own side of the field to set up a New England score. Then he took two sacks with the Jets in scoring range. The first ended any hope of a touchdown. The second made a kick that New England partially blocked longer than it needed to be and probably forced Nick Folk to kick it with a lower trajectory than he would have needed to otherwise.

There were other factors in the loss, but once again the Jets didn't get what they needed from the quarterback. Stretches of good play within a game are simply not good enough when combined with mistakes that big.

Mourn below. The official recap will be up later.
