Now that the season is effectively over, you're going to start hearing a lot of spin and convenient leaks in the media. For example, there's a report going around now that Rex Ryan really wanted Darrelle Revis and John Idzik didn't, even though Revis reached out to the team. Numerous reports previously have indicated that this wasn't the case, that Revis wasn't really interested in the New York Jets and that Woody Johnson had put the kibosh on the whole thing before it even really happened. Despite that, we're now seeing that convenient report.
Why is it convenient? Because Rex is about to start looking for a new job, and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, wouldn't be doing a very good job if he didn't start manipulating and rehabbing Rex's public image. Rex's image is tarnished, after failing to make the playoffs for the past four years. Whereas he started his tenure saying he wouldn't kiss Bill Belichick's rings, he may have to if he loses to Belichick in his last home game of his Jet career. Sexton needs to make you forget about this and make you think he's really a good head coach at heart that just got screwed.
That isn't to say Sexton is wrong to do this; it's his job to make Rex more appealing for the next employer. But it doesn't mean you have to buy into it lock, stock, and barrel.
So you're going to see a lot of conveniently timed leaks over the next few weeks. There may be a grain of truth to some of them, but for the most part, they'll be hoping to just rehab Rex's image, truth be damned. Don't be a sucker; don't fall for the hype.
