Here's an interesting little note for your Wednesday.
The last time the Jets started a season 1-8 was seven years ago in 2007.
Their opponent that week? None other than the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Meadowlands.
The Jets actually won that game 19-16 in overtime. After a quick 10-0 first quarter lead evaporated, the Jets rallied to tie the game late in the fourth quarter on a 28 yard field goal by Mike Nugent with 28 seconds to go in regulation. The Jets then won it in overtime on a 38 yard field goal by Nugent.
The Jets went on to record wins against Miami and Kansas City to end a dismal 4-12 season. They were rewarded with the sixth pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Their selection was regrettably Vernon Gholston.
The Steelers entered that game 7-2, and few gave the Jets much of a chance. That probably means nothing for Sunday, but perhaps it will serve as something of an omen.
