Jets vs. Steelers: Phillip Adams to Play?

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Rex Ryan indicated Phillip Adams will see some playing time this week at his news conference yesterday.

On if they will let the cornerbacks compete again this week…

Let them all compete again and we feel like we will play them all. Phillip (Adams) never really had a shot to play this past week, but I’m sure he’ll get an opportunity this week.

As you might remember, Adams has the one interception the Jets have recorded as a team in nine games.

At this point it really doesn't matter. The Jets don't have any good options at cornerback. They just keep cycling through the bad ones hoping somebody steps up. It's not even debatable at this point that the Jets made catastrophic blunders this offseason in their failure to address the position. Into town rolls Ben Roethlisberger fresh off a 6 touchdown game.

You get the feeling Rex is trying to convince himself there is some sort of viable answer at this point.

On what it demonstrates about the state of the team’s cornerback position that Williams was able to earn a starting position shortly after being signed…

I think when you look at it, one thing that it does show is we’re trying to find guys that can help us and guys that can maybe elevate the position and I think we did a good job when we brought in Marcus Williams. I don’t think anybody really knew him as much and then all of a sudden, it’s like, you see what you see on the practice field. Obviously, somebody up top in our pro personnel department, they recognized, hey, this guy might have a shot here and that’s what we brought him in for. Same holds true for Josh Thomas and Phillip Adams for that matter. So, we’re just trying to give ourselves an opportunity to be successful and we keep looking and if there’s somebody out there that we think can help our football team and improve our team then we’re going to bring him in.
