Despite the emotional postgame locker room speech by John Idzik to cap off the 2013-2014 season, a new report from The New York Post's Mark Cannizzaro Tuesday night claims, according to multiple different sources, that the New York Jets general manager has planned to fire Rex Ryan since before the season began—and Rex knew about it.
According to Cannizzaro's report, Ryan has heard from multiple coaches and scouts throughout the season that Idzik had communicated to people that his intentions were to let the boisterous coach go at season's end.
"We're running out of tomorrows," Ryan told the media early on Tuesday in what was possibly a more ominous press conference than it seemed prior to this new report.
Twice this season coaches of rival AFC teams have expressed their relief to Ryan about his potential firing, not due to disrespect, but because they would no longer have to face off against him and his teams.
"One thing I know, unless it changes drastically, I will be the head coach here for the next five weeks." -Rex Ryan
Multiple sources claimed that if Ryan is fired after the completion of the 2014-2015 season that Rex would go straight into television—a role seemingly made for his personality.
It's important to remember that reports such as these are not set in stone; it is quite possible that said sources are misinformed, or this is a ploy from Rex Ryan's agent to soften the blow for his potential firing at the end of the season, but it's something that this reporter has put him name on and staked his reputation to, and that's something worth sharing and having a discussion about.
