Congratulations, you are the second team to win the annual Percy Harvin sweepstakes!! You probably have a lot of questions, and I with the brief time I have will do my best to answer them.
So, all funniness aside, my name is PurpleEaters and I am a full time occasional writer at the Daily Norseman. Going back to before the 2009 draft, the Vikings WR corps was considered one of their numerous weaknesses, with guys like Bobby Wade, Sidney Rice, and Bernard Berrian headlining (coincidentally none of them play in the NFL anymore) one of the leagues worst recieving corps. Enter Percy Harvin, who everyone (including myself) had high hopes for. He showed very early on that he was seemingly worth the high draft pick.
He would go on to have a fantastic rookie campaign with Brett Favre at the helm, with the team falling just a few plays short of the Super Bowl. Fast forward to 2011, no Brett Favre, washed up McNabb at the helm, Harvin was the only playmaking wide receiver we had. Besides handing it off to AP, he WAS the wide receiving offense. In 2012 he was probably well on his way to being considered for MVP or OPOY, (seems like ridiculous homerism but seriously look at this stats for the first 9 games of that season)
Then something strange happened, Harvin sprained his ankle in a midseason matchup against Seattle, initial reports were that he'd be out a couple weeks. Then in the span of about a week he went from doubtful to play, to on season ending IR. Really? Season over midway through due to an injury that Teddy Bridgewater was recently out for a week and a half for?
Some of you are smelling the fish all the way from Seattle and rightfully so, there were many reports after the report that he was placed on IR in 2012 that Harvin argued with Frazier and at one point on live television was seen yelling at him on the sideline. He didn't get along with other teammates and was considered a "locker room cancer".
So he gets traded to an incredibly talented team that is building the pieces for an eventual Super Bowl victory. The Hawks give up a first, third and a 7th to get him. Great for Harvin right? On the surface it'd look that way until a hip "injury" derailed his season before it ever started.
He wins a super bowl with a great young team and a great young QB. Then all of a sudden the following year, his presence is virtually non-existent on offense outside of a few plays. Then he gets traded again?
My opinion is that Harvin is like the kid in pre-school who just has to have every toy in the toybox just so you cant have it. When he's the only one there and he gets to play with all his toys he's overly ecstatic. But once another kid comes along and he's forced to share, he throws a crybaby tantrum. Percy just can't handle NOT being the focal point on an offense. If his talents aren't being utilized to his expectations he basically shuts down on the team, does everything he can to make his stay more difficult, and eventually gets shipped out.
So Jets fans, if Geno can pull his head out of his ass, and Harvin can get open (whether or not that's his fault or not if he does) and he becomes the focal point of the offense and all the offensive spotlight is on him, then expect a happy Percy Harvin. But if his stats for the rest of the season read something Randy Moss Tennessee Titans-esque (seriously I still forget Randy played for those guys) then he'll likely be on to the next team.
I really personally hope that Rex Ryan grabs his speech from 2010 Hard Knocks (which is actually my favorite season I rewatch it a few times a year)
PERCY, LET'S MAKE SURE YOU PLAY LIKE A FUCKIN' NEW YORK JET, AND NOT SOME FUCKIN' SLAPDICK PLAYER. ARE YOU CLEAR ON WHAT THE FUCK I WANNA SEE WHEN WE PLAY BUFFALO? GOOD, NOW LETS GO EAT A GODDAMN SNACK!
I really love Rex Ryan for that line alone. Here's to hoping he can whip Percy into shape. What say you Jets fans?
