Jets vs. Broncos: Holding the Broncos Up

New, comments
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

A quick look at the officiating crew tomorrow shows something that might work in the favor of the Jets. Brad Allen's crew is working this game.

I looked back through play by play game logs this year, and found Allen's crew has called at least four offensive holding penalties in the four games he has worked this year. So far in Jets games this year in three of the five games, there have been less than two in three of five games.

The Jets having a chance to pull the upset tomorrow likely hinges on the ability of the defensive line to get to Peyton Manning. Obviously a crew that is more likely to throw holding flags helps a top notch defensive line. It is not just about the yardage. An early call can change the way an offensive lineman plays. If he sees he cannot get away with much, he will have to play more conservatively when latching onto a defender, to that guy's advantage.

I couldn't tell you whether this will be a factor, but it is something to keep in the back of your mind.
