You might remember Az-Zahir Hakim as a receiver and a return man from the Greatest Show on Turf Rams teams. His brother, Saalim Hakim was signed to the Jets' practice squad in October and called up to the active roster in December. He previously had brief stints with the Cowboys, Rams, and Saints and in the United Football League.
What sticks out about Hakim is his speed. He is pretty small at 5'11" and 188 pounds, but the Tarleton State product has been timed in the low 4.2 range in the 40 yard dash.
As far as his impact went in 2013, it was minimal. The Jets used him on a couple of end arounds. One resulted in an 8 yard gain against the Panthers. The other an 11 yard loss against the Browns. He also did use his speed to break loose deep against Carolina. An accurate throw by Geno Smith likely would have resulted in a long touchdown reception.
Hakim is under contract for just $495,000 next year. He counts nothing against the cap if cut. Given his great speed, I think the Jets should bring him to camp and see whether they can find him some kind of role on offense and/or in the return game.
