Report: Santonio Holmes Expected to Play in Week 1

The Jets may have their star receiver for Geno Smith's first career start.

Jets beat writer Brian Costello told Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts on WFAN today that he expects Santonio Holmes to play Week 1. Holmes was recently seen practicing before the third preseason game against the Giants and has been reported to be progressing ever since.

It was reported yesterday that Holmes' Jets teammates also believe that he'll be on the field to play the Buccaneers this Sunday.

There's no question that the Jets aren't deep on offense heading into this season and with Geno Smith making his first career start this weekend, having a veteran receiver such as Santonio Holmes will make an impact. Even if Holmes is lost on Revis Island for one Sunday afternoon, his presence allows guys like Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley to play against lesser defensive players in the secondary, which will put a little less stress on the rookie quarterback.
