The Jets and running back Mike Goodson have agreed to restructure his contract. Goodson will take a paycut. Over the Cap has the details.
The sides appeared to come to a middle ground rather than going through any CBA related process of recovering money. Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Goodson reduced his base pay from $1 million to $715,000 in 2013, a loss of $285,000 on the season. In addition the team converted $650,000 and $850,000 of his Paragraph 5 salary in 2014 and 2015 respectively into roster bonuses.
Click over for an extremely thorough explanation of the motivations both sides had and the big picture implications. It is a fantastic read.
As far as this goes, it helps the Jets out. The Goodson contract was always a pretty low risk one given the amount of money involved, but the team is now a little bit extra protected after the running back's ugly offseason and training camp no show.
Goodson will begin the 2013 season suspended.
