NFL Practice Squad: What You Need To Know.

So the Jets are now down to their 53 man roster, and the difficult cuts have been made. However there is no rest for the wicked as the NFL practice squads are announced at noon ET today. Here is what you need to know.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

I's important to fill your practice squad with the right players, as we speak their will be numerous team officials working their way through the cuts and waiver wire from yesterday to find talented prospects that they want to stash on their own practice squad to develop. No doubt some of the players we released yesterday will be making a comeback this afternoon.

So here is what you need to know about practice squads, taken from Article 33 of the collective bargaining agreement:

  • Teams are eligible to maintain a practice squad that does not exceed 8 players for the entire season.
  • Any player under contract with a club as a practice squad player can negotiate and sign a player contract with any club at any time without penalty. However he must be signed to the active or inactive list.
  • Can not sign a practice squad player from another team directly to your own practice squad.
  • Practice squad player may not sign a player contract with the team's next opponent later than 4:00pm on the 6th day preceding the game and tenth day during a bye week.
  • The minimum salary for a practice squad player for 2013 will be $6,000 per week.
  • Have no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL (An accrued season is six or more games on the active roster)
  • Have one prior Accrued Season in which the player was on the 45-man active roster for no more than 8 games.
  • If served two seasons on a practice squad, are eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment.
  • If a player is promoted from the practice squad to the active roster, they must stay on the active roster for three weeks and receive the NFL minimum salary for all three weeks.
  • If the player is released before he has served three weeks on the active roster, the team still must pay the player for all three weeks.
So with that all said, who would you like to see the Jets sign to their practice squad for the 2013 season?
