Dalton Freeman, an undrafted rookie interior lineman vying for a roster spot, suffered a high ankle sprain in goal line drills yesterday.
Undrafted rookie center Dalton Freeman, who had been impressive in the first week of camp, suffered a high ankle sprain on the final play of goal-line drills.
Why is this significant? Freeman is performing well enough to have a serious shot at both earning a roster spot and serving as Nick Mangold's primary backup. Michael Fensom says Rex Ryan praised Freeman to the press on Thursday. Obviously, it is a good idea to limit expectations when it comes to undrafted rookies. We all remember the Colin Baxter starting experience two years ago. High ankle sprains can take a while to heal, though, and Freeman has apparently one of the best of the bunch among backup linemen so it is a little bit of bad news, even if it isn't terribly significant for the team. Training camp is about staying healthy as much as anything.
