Jets Injury Report: Mark Sanchez Unlikely to Play Week 1?

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

Ian Rapoport says Mark Sanchez is "unlikely" to play in the opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That would make Geno Smith the starting quarterback by what Homer Simpson once called the two sweetest words in the English language, default. One might imagine it as an audition for Geno. If he played poorly, the team might go back to Sanchez once Mark healed. If Geno plays credibly, it would be difficult to yank the guy with upside from the starting lineup for the guy who doesn't have much.

(Before anybody suggests it, let's make one thing clear. Matt Simms is not going to start over Geno. Playing well against fringe players in the preseason doesn't make him a viable option to start.)
