Billy Cundiff, who kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime against the Giants Saturday night has been released to make way for Dan Carpenter. The Jets signed the former Dolphins kicker.
The Jets have announced that they released kicker Billy Cundiff and signed kicker Dan Carpenter today. Carpenter will now have a few days to compete withNick Folk before the Jets choose one for their 53-man roster.
This is bad news for Nick Folk. Carpenter is a better kicker. He's hit 81.9% of his career field goal attempt. Folk hasn't even hit 80% of his tries in a season since 2008. Carpenter is also a much better kickoff guy. The Dolphins have rated 10th, 12th, and 14th in touchback rate respectively over the last three years. The Jets have been at the bottom of the barrel with Folk.
It has never really made sense why the Jets couldn't find a replacement for Folk. It seems like they finally have.
