OT Jason Smith has played for three teams thus far in his career... the St. Louis Rams, the New York Jets, and the New Orleans Saints. In only one of those places has Smith actually played well; New York. Smith mostly played in the "jumbo" formation, where he became semi-famous as his appearance on the field meant the announcer would yell, "Number sixty-three is eligible." He was also known as part of the Wayne Hunter trade. In his time in New York, Smith looked capable. The one time he had to fill in for RT Austin Howard on a single drive, he looked serviceable. However, Smith is best suited to a limited role as a jumbo tackle, where the team can minimize his responsibilities. Pressed into a full-time role would likely prove disastrous.
The Jets have decided to bring him back, re-signing him after he was waived by New Orleans. I, for one, am glad to see sixty-three back in Green and White. For the season he was with the team, he proved to be a capable player in certain packages. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do again.
