[Edit by John B, 08/01/13 8:21 PM EDT ] As JGrill77 notes, Winters got to work with the first team because Stephen Peterman is dealing with a shoulder injury. Hopefully he takes advantage of his opportunity and grabs onto the starting job for the next decade or so.

How significant is this? We do not know. Hopefully it is a sign Winters is progressing. With either a rookie or a Sanchez at quarterback, the Jets will need to give as much help to the signal caller as possible. That means clean pockets and a strong run game which in turn means no weak link on the offensive line. Stephen Peterman probably cannot provide that. Winters is the only real chance the Jets have to get good guard play from the spot opposite Willie Colon.
One of the keys to the Jets potentially surprising people is Winters not just getting the job but also playing at a high level. It is not clear how good he is at the moment, but it is encouraging to hear he has at least made enough progress to work with the starters.
