Sanchez Losing Confidence in QB Race?

Sanchez cut a confident figure pre-training camp, however after an error filled start, is the 5th year starters confidence starting to take a dent?

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Pre-training camp, Mark cut a confident figure. We heard how he was confident he would be the starting Quarterback, how he was feeling great physically and mentally and how he was ready to come out and put the past behind him. Unfortunately that was pre-camp before the interceptions started coming, before he saw Geno Smith first hand and before he started taking live reps. Now that training camp is in full flow, we are starting to see a more defeated Mark Sanchez, a man who now says that he doesn’t know if he is winning the QB race, and we better ask the coaches. He does add that he is feeling confident and thinks he is playing well, unfortunately the conviction just isn’t there anymore, or at least that’s the impression I get.

Does Sanchez think he's leading QB race? “Um, I dunno. Ask the coaches. I feel good tho, feel confident, feel like I’m playing really well.”

I think the problem with Sanchez is despite throwing interceptions and by most accounts not looking much better than he was a year ago, He still believes that he is performing well, that confidence phrase was a throwaway in my book. He has to say that, he has to try and make people believe it, but does he believe it anymore? Certainly not as much as he did.

Yesterday John wrote that by all accounts it seems as though Geno Smith is pulling ahead in the Quarterback race, he is keeping hold of the football, throwing touchdown passes and not finding corners, safeties and linebackers with his passes. He’s not the completed prospect; in fact he is far from it. He is still holding the football way too long, and when you read practise reports, you are guaranteed to see numerous sacks next to Geno’s name. However Geno as a rookie, is making less mistakes than Sanchez a 5th year starter, now if that doesn’t panic and dent Mark’s confidence I don’t know what will.

There is time and anything can change, but Sanchez isn’t quite the confident figure we all believed him to be coming into camp, at least that’s what it looks like.
