Today, quarterbacks coach David Lee stated that Matt Simms has the best arm of all the quarterbacks on the roster, but that he isn't accurate enough to seriously compete for the starting role. I have numerous questions regarding this, ranging from if Lee has ever actually seen Simms play, to if Mark Sanchez is disqualified based on the accuracy criteria alone.
Seriously, he stated that Matt Simms has the best arm. I'm not sure if that's an indictment on the other quarterbacks, or a reflection of the fact that he's more comparable to JaMarcus Russell, who can throw sixty yards from his knees, but still isn't a good quarterback.
In any case, Lee also said that Sanchez and Geno Smith are currently locked into their competition, taking turns every two days with the starters, and that neither has separated himself. Lee is working extensively with Sanchez on his fundamentals and to reduce the number of turnovers. Lee also stated that Smith may be ready to start by the time the season comes around.
John Idzik promised competition, and that's what these guys are getting. Except for Simms, he's too busy being awesome to have to worry about competing.
