Florio: Revis Deal Could Be Soon; Logic: It Won't

Robert Mayer-US PRESSWIRE

A little earlier Scott brought to you the report from the one and only Mike Florio that the Jets have an offer on the table for Darrelle Revis.

Florio strongly insinuates that a deal could happen soon. I'm not really seeing where he's getting his interpretation from.

A league source tells PFT that the Jets have an offer on the table for Revis. Per the source, the offer is a “good” one, both as to the compensation given to the team and the financial package that would be extended to Revis.

I have no idea what the heck that means, and I'm guessing you don't either. Can we get a little more specific here? Is this team just calling up John Idzik and saying, "We have a good offer. Make the deal, and we'll tell you what it is." What makes it so good? Is it just that Florio's source thinks the offer is good?

Another source tells PFT that, if such an offer has been made, the financial component has yet to be shared with the Revis camp. To date, the Jets and Revis have had no talks, and the Jets have not given Revis’s agents permission to talk to other teams regarding a new contract.

That's kind of a big deal isn't it? I mean anybody who has followed Revis' career through the two holdouts knows that his representation has turned down a number of offers the Jets felt were "good." Florio's source thinking an offer is good doesn't mean Revis will think that (or the Jets for that matter). And is this team going to carry on with this "good" offer if they don't have the terms for a Revis extension in place at the time of a trade? It's tough to imagine. You give up a "good" package for a player who might be a one year rental. That player knows this and gains all the leverage if you don't have him extended at the time of the trade. How do you explain to your fanbase next year that you gave the Jets a "good" package for one year of Darrelle Revis?

It’s believed that, during the annual March get-together, the Jets will make a strong push to work out a deal, possibly with Johnson directly negotiating terms with other owners.

It's believed? Who believes this? What are we basing this belief on? What the heck does this mean?

Now let's go back to the start of this story. Here's what Florio drew his reader in with.

A day ago, the chances of Percy Harvin and Anquan Boldin being traded before Darrelle Revis would have been regarded as slim, at best.

But Harvin and Boldin are both changing teams, while Revis remains a Jet.

So how much longer will he be one? Possibly, not much.

So Florio tells his reader that a deal could be coming soon. What is the basis for this? We have the fact that a team has made an offer that somebody thinks is "good." We don't know who this person is. We don't know whether the Jets think the offer is good. We know for a fact that Revis has not yet said this is a good offer. Are these offers so "good" that the Jets and Revis will just throw up their hands and not try to negotiate more? Doesn't it behoove the Jets and Revis to play hardball and try to get more if the opening package is "good?"

This does not even get into the complications with his injury. Is another team willing to give a "good" offer to the Jets and Revis without any knowledge of the knee? They're going to be fine with just guessing? Revis isn't even running at this point. Wouldn't it make sense for a "good" offer to be contingent on something like that? And how is the team going to get assurances? Are the Jets going to allow them to inspect Revis? Is Revis going to make a stink about it? What kind of medical records can they get? We are in uncharted waters in this situation. There is not much precedent for a team and a player looking to cash in big while rehabbing an injury this serious. These things will probably have to be negotiated.

Aren't these the kind of things you should think about before you declare it's possible Revis' days with the Jets could be ending soon? I mean not to take away from somebody telling you there is a "good" offer for Revis and it being believed that Woody Johnson will negotiate a Revis trade, but if Florio has answers here for these pretty basic questions, it would be nice of him to share.

Now it feels like an eventual Revis trade is likely. The Jets might begin trying to lay the framework. Maybe something does get done in the next few days. If that happens, though, odds are the trade partner has either overlooked or doesn't care to get necessary assurances their "good" offer will not blow up in their face. I'm sure the Jets would love it if they could get this matter done quickly. It would take a pretty dumb partner, though, to just throw offers the Jets and Revis couldn't refuse without getting the slightest medical assurances.

It's why it feels like this process could last a while.
