Conor Orr reports the Jets have signed free agent quarterback David Garrard.
#Jets have signed QB David Garrard
Garrard has not played in an NFL regular season game since 2010. We don't have terms of the deal yet, but given Garrard's lack of recent game action, it would be difficult to imagine it being much more than the minimum.
If the Jets had grabbed Garrard in 2009 or 2010, he would have been the perfect guy for those teams. He protected the football in those days and hit enough passes to keep a team competitive even though he didn't do enough to carry a team himself. If you give him a good defense, a good run game, and weapons to carry the load, you would have been very happy with Garrard.
Nobody knows how much Garrard has left in the tank, but he's probably some sort of diminished form of his former self. He relied on mobility to extend plays and pick yards up on the ground. Some of that is likely gone at age 35. The question is how much.
A declining Garrard is still probably better than Mark Sanchez.
