Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhingweg says Mark Sanchez will likely have the edge in a quarterback competition.
Quote below via Brian Costello:
“Mark will probably have just a little bit of a leg up it would appear,” he said in a conference call Monday. “I would like to have competition at that position as well as all the other positions. There are a select few on this football team that have kind of earned the right to step in there as No. 1 on the depth chart, but I certainly would like competition at all the other spots, including the quarterback spot.”
This is a bit disconcerting to hear, but I can't put much stock into this comment. He doesn't even know who the other quarterbacks will be yet so it's difficult to buy any characterization of the quarterback competition.
If the Jets want Sanchez to start, Sanchez will start. They will create a fake competition where there is no credible alternative and/or ignore the results of the competition. These are frankly the only probable scenarios where Sanchez could emerge as the starter. We will know soon enough whether or not that will be the case, but only then will it be time to be irritated.
