SBNation.com is out with a new mock draft the day after the end of the 2013 NFL regular season. They have the Jets taking a tight end in the first round.
18. New York Jets: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
With the top three wide receivers gone, the Jets could go after a dangerous pass catching tight end like Ebron or Texas Tech's Jace Amaro. Ebron gets the nod because he's basically an oversized wide receiver. He attacks the seam and can beat most defensive backs over the top with his speed
At this early stage, I personally like Amaro better, but I would not be unhappy with Ebron.
On paper this looks like a very good class at tight end. There are a few players who profile as potential matchup nightmares in the NFL. Just thinking about how teams construct their rosters, having a top tier tight end can take a passing game to another level. If you have an elite receiver, there are still cornerbacks who can shut them down. There are not many defenders capable of handling the best tight ends in the league for sixty minutes. Taking them away means dedicating extra resources, which opens things up for the receivers on the outside.
The Jets need to upgrade their wide receiver corps, but more than anything they need weapons in the passing game. That could mean the tight end position. It always depends on how the board falls, but taking at least one tight end early is something to consider.
