Fire Everyone! Okay, Now What?

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

There are a lot of fans out there screaming for heads to roll. Rex Ryan, Marty Mornhinweg, Geno Smith, heck, they'd re-fire Mike Tannenbaum if they could. Following the season, it would be very easy for John Idzik to clean house and bring in "his" guys, and nobody would blame him. That's the easy part. The hard part is replacing them with someone better.

It's also easy for fans to say, "It can't possibly get worse." In the NFL, it can ALWAYS get worse. Remember how awful Brian Schottenheimer was? It got worse under Tony Sparano and, so far, Marty Mornhinweg. It got worse with Mark Sanchez with the buttfumble and the loss to the Arizona Cardinals last year. It can ALWAYS get worse, so the statement, "anyone would be better" is simply untrue.

I think fans also get caught up in the "grass is always greener" syndrome. Then they find out that the green grass is filled with dog poop. That's the way it's been with Brett Ratliff, Greg McElroy, and now Matt Simms. It's what happened with Schottenheimer, Sparano, and possibly Mornhinweg.

The question is, once everyone (hypothetically) gets fired, what do you do? Who would YOU replace the coaching staff with? Vague statements like, "We need to get a franchise QB!" are great in theory but almost impossible in practice; why do you think so few teams truly have franchise quarterbacks? It just is much easier said than done. So let's play Monday Morning General Manager right now. How would you begin to repair the damage? Who would you bench or fire and who would you replace them with? Be as specific as you can muster.

To be clear, I'm not saying Rex Ryan or whoever should be fired because every other option is going to stink. I'm just asking what you would do, because it's easy to skip over the hard follow up question to "Fire everyone!"
