In the third part of this week's GIF series between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills, let's watch one of Matt Simms' plays.
Fourth quarter, 9:41 remaining. The Jets are lined up in 21 personnel, which means two running backs, one tight end, and two wide receivers. The Bills are in a standard 3-4 defense, which means three defensive linemen, four linebackers, and four defensive backs. The initial set up indicates a run, which is what the play-action was for. The Bills reveal themselves to be in a mixed defense, which means they're using both man and zone defenses. Notice the cornerbacks appear to be in man, but the inside linebackers appear to be in zones. The right outside linebacker rushes Simms, but the left outside linebacker moves to cover Chris Ivory out of the backfield.
In any case, Simms drops back, immediately recognizes that his quick primary read isn't open, and resets. Notice the pocket is clean, and there isn't any real pressure on Simms. Simms delivers a well-placed ball right on Jeff Cumberland's numbers, between the two defenders. Cumberland waltzes into the end zone, and the Jets finally score another touchdown to only be down 34-14.
