Dave Caldwell is in his fifth season with the Atlanta Falcons. This year, he took the title Director of Personnel after Les Snead took over as Rams general manager. Prior to that, he was Atlanta's Director of College Scouting. Before coming to Atlanta, he was a scout with the Colts for a decade.
There is a lot to like about Caldwell. When the front office was was part of took charge, the team was a mess. Bobby Petrino thought the situation was so hopeless that he bolted before his first season with the Falcons ended. Since then, they have five straight winning seasons and built one of the most talented rosters in the league, primarily through the Draft.
Atlanta has hit on early picks like Matt Ryan, Sam Baker, and Julio Jones. They have added supporting talent in later rounds, names like Kroy Biermann, Harry Douglas, Thomas DeCoud, and Jacquizz Rodgers. They put priority on finding a franchise quarterback and hit on Matt Ryan. They haven't traded up consistently, but they picked their spots to land Jones.
Being part of a successful franchise is a good thing. It allows you to see how things are done on a winning team.
I think Caldwell merits consideration. What about you?
