New York Jets General Manager Rumors: Russ Ball Gets an Interview

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Florio reports the Jets have interviewed Packers executive Russ Ball.

Ball, who serves as Ted Thompson’s right-hand man in Green Bay, has been with the Packers since 2008. He previously worked with the Saints, Redskins, Vikings, and Chiefs.

The record Green Bay has had with Ball's help merits a look. Ball is another guy on the business side of things. He runs Green Bay's salary cap and contract negotiations. He also oversees other departments, most notably player development. The Packers have surely been excellent in the player development area under Ball.

I guess I'll repeat two key beliefs I have about the search, which you're probably tired of hearing at this point. First, just because somebody comes from a winning organization does not make them a good candidate. However, candidates from winning organizations deserve consideration for playing a hand in the winning.

Second, the ability to manage, delegate, and surround oneself with quality people is more important in a general manager than a background purely in player personnel.
