Both Missouri teams made defensive coordinator hires yesterday that are news to Jets fans.
The Chiefs hired Bob Sutton.
The Kansas City Chiefs have a new defensive coordinator, Bob Sutton, the team announced today.
Sutton joins the Chiefs after spending the past 13 years with the New York Jets as an assistant coach, the longest tenure for an assistant coach in franchise history.
I'm not really seeing the logic behind that one. Sutton was pretty terrible as Jets defensive coordinator between 2006 and 2008. He was so bad that Eric Mangini frequently had to become more hands on with the defense. I wish him luck, but Andy Reid has made curious hires on the defensive side of the ball. That trend continues.
In other news, the Rams appear set to hire Rob Ryan as their defensive coordinator per Brian Costello.
Another source says Rob Ryan to the Rams is not a done deal. Still sounds like it will get done, but stay tuned.
For some reason there was this fascination with Rob Ryan coming to the Jets. It never made much sense to me. Rob isn't a very good coach. His defenses are usually near the bottom of the league. More than that, having family members work for one another is just a bad idea. It creates all kinds of unnecessary complications. The Jets are better off avoiding them.
