If you didn't know already, this Friday at 7:30 PM, our very own New York Jets will take on the Cincinnati Bengals in the pre-season opener. As with most pre-season games, it starts off very exciting as we see the starters in for a series, and at most one quarter. After which point, the second and third stringers will test their mettle, weeding out those worthy of a roster spot and those who are not as fortunate. So here, I ask YOU who you're interested in seeing during the pre-season.
For myself, the person that I'm interested in is Aaron Maybin. Maybin has been dominating camp, blitzing at will and earning a sack it seems every single practice. Can he turn it on under the lights? It's only the pre-season, and the opposing offensive coordinators might not risk their starting QBs with enough passing plays to make a difference. But can the bulked up Maybin make even a little difference in plays that aren't obvious passing downs?
I'm also interested in Bilal Powell. Powell has supposedly been lighting camp on fire, but can he do it against another team in an actual game? This will be the first test to see if he is a training camp phony in the mold of David Clowney, or if he can be the real deal and actually contribute this season.
Finally, I'm interested in LaRon Landry. Rex Ryan has indicated that Landry will play, although I expect it to be for a very short period, so I'd like to see if Landry still can crush fools like he did in college and his early years in the NFL.
It's only the pre-season, so my hopes are tempered, but there are a lot of questions being asked. What's the state of the banged-up receiving corps? Can our running backs carry the team? Will the offensive line hold up with a weak right flank? Can our safeties finally cover a tight end? And will our defensive line live up to its potential of being the New York Sack Exchange 2.0? We'll soon know the answers to those questions, beginning this Friday. What, or whom, are you most interested in seeing?
