I think we all saw this coming, but it has been made official today:
LaDainian Tomlinson will sign with the San Diego Chargers and announce his retirement at a news conference Monday, the team announced Sunday.
Both Tomlinson and Chargers president Dean Spanos will speak at the 2 p.m. ET news conference Monday.
Tomlinson has put together a hall of fame career that includes ranking fifth on the all-time rushing list with 13,684 yards. His 145 career rushing touchdowns rank second, and his 162 total touchdowns rank third all-time.
I will certainly remember him for his cuts and vision and that great MVP season in 2006, when he set league single-season records with 31 touchdowns and also had a very impressive 5.2 yard average. Tomlinson won the NFL's rushing title in 2006 and '07.
He was the 5th overall selection in 2001 out of TCU for the Chargers. He was an instant hit with 8 straight 1,000 yard seasons and 9 straight double digit touchdown seasons. He came to the Jets for the 2010 and 2011 season, he was past his best but he still proved valuable with 914 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2010. His leadership was needed and he always gave 100% every time he hit the field.
Happy Retirement to one of the greatest running backs, team mates and leaders to ever pad up.
