Matt Cavanaugh on Mark Sanchez

Matt Cavanaugh spoke about Mark Sanchez's struggles late last year.

There were turnovers that were not his fault that were credited to him," Cavanaugh told the Daily News in his first public comments since the Jets missed the playoffs at 8-8 last season. "But there were enough that playing that position he needs to cut some of those down. Most of them came from just poor decision-making.

I think some of the issues last year were due to the scheme. Brian Schottenheimer's offense was so complicated that it seemed at times Sanchez was focused on making sure one of his receivers was pointlessly motioning the right way than he was on seeing what the defense was doing. Tony Sparano's simplified offense will probably help with that. The system was not the only problem, though. Cavanaugh is right. There were many instances where Sanchez just made bad reads. This needs to be fixed.
