Dan Kadar of SB Nation's excellent Mocking the Draft has a second round mock up this morning. He has the Jets taking a player from Marshall University for the first time since Chad Pennington in 2000.

47. New York Jets - Vinny Curry, OLB/DE, Marshall
First-round pick: Quinton Coples, DE

Jets fans wanted Melvin Ingram in the first round, and it would have been a good pick. Curry is a little less of a natural linebacker transition end, but he's relentless as a pass rusher.

Stephen Hill, Alshon Jeffery, Jonathan Martin, Cordy Glenn, Andre Branch, and Courtney Upshaw are all gone by pick 47 in the mock. Curry would be an interesting choice if things played out this way. The top two safeties in a weak safety Draft are gone. The Jets might be resigned to another year of Eric Smith starting. The best way to minimize his deficiencies in coverage is to really beef up the pass rush so the quarterback is forced to throw early, and he does not need to cover as long. Adding a second pass rusher could make the Jets fearsome up front.

I do have some reservations, however, about focusing exclusively on the defense early. Offense is the issue on this team. In the first round, I can see the argument that Coples was elite talent. Is Curry more of an impact guy than a tackle like Bobbie Massie? I'm not sure.
