GGN Crossfire: New Weekly Round-Table Discussion.

About two weeks ago, I posed a new concept, a roundtable discussion involving GGN members. Here is the pilot conversation. Much thanks to Dabu7 and Darshv3 for joining and giving us their opinions and really making it a fun experience.

Join after the jump as we discuss Sanchez's and Holmes' relationship, the state of the Jets organization, the Sparano hiring, Sanchez's potential, and Darshv3 tells Gisele to STFU. (And a shameless plug)

Before we show the conversation, this chat cannot start without commentators. if you wish to be a commentator, we start at 9:15 every Thursday. Email is the way we set everything up, and the only way to become a commentator. (End shameless plug)

Sp0rtsfan86:

So here's the first question: is mark sanchez and holmes relationship repairable in your opinion or do you think they are just going through the motions?

Darshv 3:

Of course it's repairable

dabu7:

i dunno. it appears, at least from twitter as if theyre trying to be buddies

darshv3:

hey got along just fine in '10

dabu7:

be buddies dammit

darshv3:

and they're grown men, they can work it out

dabu7:

hey, you cant go wrong w/ a box of chocolates

darshv3:

They were cookies, but yeah

dabu7

buddies is a first step though

Sp0rtsfan86

The thing is if Holmes is that bad of a cancer, how can you be on his side?

Darshv3:

I think this whole thing is sorta overblown

dabu7:

if theyre buddies theyre less likely to get in a fight, holmes is a cancer but you at least have to give it a chance if he's gonna be on the team....

darshv3:

I think Holmes was mad because of his lack of production, not winning a lot of games, the negative attention from the media on him, a system that Him and Mark didn't really seem to like, etc. and it all kinda just accumulated at the very end

Sp0rtsfan86:

Ok let me ask it this way. Holmes gets into a kerfuffle with a Jets teammate not named Sanchez. Does Sanchez defend him or go after him?

Darshv3:

I'd think Mark would probably defend both of them that just seems to be his nature

dabu7:

i'm not sure. that says more about sanchez in general than having to do w/ his relation in regards to holmes. is sanchez the type of teammate who backs up a player. i have no idea?

mark would prob try smoothing things over

darshv3:

Well, Dabu, i've watched several of his press conferences and interviews, and he NEVER throws anyone but him under the bus

sp0rtsfan86:

Good point. Maybe that's why he's been bashed in the media. No one can tell what kind of teammate that Sanchez is..." he's been babied"

dabu7:

darshv, you make a good pt. The question is how he'd react in the locker room. Don't forget Sanchez has always been thrust in a leader role, but never critised internally for not being enough of a leader.

Darshv3:

That's true. From the looks of it, whenever he's criticized, all of his teammates try to defend him. It almost feels like they wanna play better for Mark's sake

Sp0rtsfan86:

Let's switch topics here. What would you rate the state of the Jets organization as a whole. do you like the vision? do you know what the vision is? Obviously forget about payroll and the finances side, I'm sure the Jets are not the Jags or Mets with money woes. Specifically I want to know where you think the Jets are right now and what letter grade you give them.

Darshv3:

that's a deep question

dabu7:

deeeeeeeep

darshv3:

i'll give them a b-

They're certainly a very talented team that's proven they can win

Sp0rtsfan86:

I'll go D+. Shoot me for it.

darshv 3

but there are some cracks to fill up and some holes that need youth/talent

Why the low grade?

Dabu7:

i give a b

and i'll shoot you for it

dabu7:

explain a d+

sp0rtsfan86:

Yes the team has lots of talent, a good coach. What really concerns me is the lack of a direction. Look at the Shotty situation where everyone knew he was a goner yet we played that out like a broadway play. Each year Rex has been fined, each season there was a distraction. I wonder if this crew can keep it together for a year.

Darshv3:

I don't think that warrants a d+ though

sp0rtsfan86:

I also knocked them down a full letter grae for bringing back Wayne Hunter.

Dabu7:

hahahahhaha

darshv3:

Cutting him would've looked really bad though, since he's apparently a good locker room guy and stood up to tone in the huddle in that last game

dabu7:

but seriously, the team still has a very good shot at the playoffs and even still the sb assuming things break right. they aint the cleveland browns

darshv3:

according to a source, this is what he told tone: "If you don't wanna F-ing play, than get your A-ss the F_ck out!!!"

dabu7:

bringing back hunter was disgraceful unless they worked out a major pay cut

darshv 3

I don't think he'll be the starter next season. and they'll probably make him rework his deal in some way

Sp0rtsfan86:

So Dabu7 your with me that the Hunter resign was terrible. And Darshv3 you think its because that he stood up to Holmes that he's still a Jet?

Darshv3:

Well obviously I didn't wanna see Hunter back

i'm just giving a reason as to why it happened

dabu7:

i havent the faintest idea why they kept hunter honestly

Sp0rtsfan86:

Also moving along what's your feeling on the Sparano hiring?

Darshv3:

I don't have a problem with it

dabu7:

no idea re sparano just happy he's not schotty

sp0rtsfan86:

haha. I think thats a pretty good summation of the whole Shotty situation.

Darshv3:

Sparano's a firey guy who's probably gonna establish a good running game, and his personality seems to match with rex's so i can see why they wanted him

sp0rtsfan86:

Ok so lets switch it up. Name one move that you want to see the Jets do before the end of the offseason.

Darshv3:

DRAFT A PASS RUSHER!!!!!

dabu7:

get a good wr, as much as they need a pass rusher or a safety, the main reason they lost a lot of gms was offense related. True, they cant beat the pats w/o a safety to cover their te's but anybody else requires an actual offense

darshv3:

I just think that our defense could really be dominant if we had a true pass rusher

dabu7:

I feel they need defense as well obviously, i just feel offense should be the #1 priority

sp0rtsfan86:

Is it true that the Jets do not have one critical need. but rather a bunch of positions needed to be upgraded?Do you want one big time player or rather lots of role players this offseason?

Dabu7:

absolutely true, wr, olb, rt and safety, i feel they should go for a right tackle in fa not the draft

darshv3:

Yeah, i'd say so, they're really strong in some areas, but very weak in others,In all realisticness, not every position is gonna be rock solid by the time next season rolls around. Role players.

Dabu7:

depends on the position

darshv3:

we have enough big time players. Revis, harris, mangold, brick cro, tone. they eat up most of our cap so now we need some role players

Dabu7:

rt i want a role player. i dont feel they have enough money to get a big time player though so its all gonna be stop gaps. All they need at rt is an avg guy who ist wayne hunter,wr they need a major upgrade at #2 plus added depth, safety has to be completely revamped and olb needs new blood

It majorly annoys me how theyve never had depth at wr

darshv3:

I think vernon carey would be a good player for RT

Well, as far as WR depth goes, they seem to really like patrick turner, since he was the 1st FA to get an extension

Dabu7:

yeah but turner is at best a 5th wr

darshv 3

Nah, i'd say he's good enough to be a #4, he did well whenever his # was called upon

Dabu7:

from a #4 i want a guy who can catch like 20 balls a yr optimally. turner is not that guy, right now all we have is a sorta #1 (holmes) and a #3 and a borderline #5

darshv3:

I have a feeling that the #2 spot is gonna be somewhat unfulfilled.I don't know that we're gonna sign a #2 receiver

Dabu7:

i'd like edwards and drafting a dude

darshv3:

I'd also like Edwards, but idk if it'll happen

Dabu7:

i usually hate drafting a wr early but this yr i kinda feel they have to.....

darshv3"

Floyd? Big bodied guy who can be a nice complement to tone. Michael floyd that is. The ND kid

sp0rtsfan86:

Floyd was a beast at ND. He had major issues with drinking at college though. Another head case on a team that sometimes looks rudderless.

Darshv3:

Supposedly he cleaned those up this year

sp0rtsfan86:

well I would too if I was about to be kicked out during the most important year.

Darshv3:

So, we could roll the dice on either him or jeffrey

darshv3:

and Jeffrey could be Mike Williams 2.0

Dabu7:

supposedly he might have conditioning probs

Sp0rtsfan86:

Speaking of potential. I have a question I've been kicking the tires on since the season ended. If Sanchez gets it straight this year what do you think his ceiling as a player is. Obviously, he probably will never be a Peyton Manning, but I'm really wondering what kind of QB you think Sanchez could be?

Darshv3:

Call me crazy butI think he could eventually be one of the best QBs we've ever had: he has the physical tools, work ethic, and "it" factor. We've seen flashes of how good he can be throughout his career, and he always seemed to be shackled by Schotty's system. He can roll out, he's got a big arm, when he's not thinking and just playing he can make some impressive plays, has an uncanny ability to get away from some sacks

Dabu7:

we havent exactly always had great qbs, so "one of the greatest qbs we've ever had" isnt such great praise

Sp0rtsfan86:

ok so what current former QB would you compare his upside to?

Darshv3:

Hmm, Favre? Elway? He just needs to find his groove.

Sp0rtsfan86:

I'm not doubting you but those are some really lofty ideals.

Darshv3:

Well obviously he's not there yet and yeah, I know it is lofty to compare Sanchez to Favre, but I feel like that's what he's capable of becoming

sp0rtsfan86:

Here's what I think Sanchez's upside will be: A tony romo stat wise QB with a great postseason record. I see his upside putting him comfortably in the top ten, but just outside the elite. I think if he can cure the turnover bug, he will become a great QB but one that ultimately will not be regarded as elite, but rather an above average QB,

Darshv3:

That makes sense

I didn't necessarily mean he'd be as good as Favre, but I meant that's the style of Qb that he is. And, I don't think he'll ever have stats as good as Tony Romo's. Tony Romo had a passer rating of 102

I can see him being like a mid-high 80s, maybe low 90s rated passer. I'm one of the Pro-Sanchez guys, so that's just how I see it.

Sp0rtsfan86:

I also consider myself pro Sanchez on the slider. but he has to prove to me this year he's capable of those kind of attributes.

Darshv3:

Same, this is really his make-or-break year, and I hope he makes it.

Darshv3:

i think all jet fans do.

Sp0rtsfan86:

I'll call it quits after this question: Who would you rather tell to STFU? Brandon Jacobs, Gisele, or Damien Woody?

Darshv 3:

Gisele, because anyone related to tom brady can just screw themself.

Thanks again,

hope you guys enjoyed it.
