New York Jets Resign Eric Smith

The Jets have resigned safety Eric Smith.

The Daily News has learned that the Jets have agreed to terms on a three-year, $7.5 million deal for Eric Smith. Gang Green initially made an offer to Smith on Friday afternoon before finalizing the deal in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Smith was solid down the stretch last year after Jim Leonhard suffered a season-ending leg injury. He was also one of the Jets’ best special teams players. A source told the News earlier in the week that he’d "be sick if we lose (Smith)." Now he doesnt' have to worry.

I have to say that I saw this coming. The team loves Smith. He is a really smart overachiever and great against the run. I like him but do not think he is athletic enough to handle good tight ends in coverage, which is critical the way teams use tight ends in the passing game today. I am just hoping there is a signing of another safety because I do not like the thought of a Smith-Jim Leonhard tandem starting in coverage.
