The Patriots added a running back, Shane Vereen, and then traded down again for a third and a fifth from Houston. Vereen feels like a reach according to the conventional wisdom. Sometimes conventional wisdom is wrong, though. Logan Mankins and Jerrod Mayo looked like reaches at the time. If you evaluate properly, you can get the last laugh. With that said, I am not upset with that pick at all. Vereen is a good back. He averaged 5 yards per carry and had at least 20 receptions in all three years at Cal. He is a complete back. They already have two pretty good backs, though. Vereen does everything pretty well, but does not seem to be elite in any part of his game.

The Dolphins also traded up to land a running back, Daniel Thomas of Kansas State. Miami's running back situation is unstable. It is not clear whether Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams will be back. Thomas is more of a power guy than a homerun threat. They gave up multiple picks to get him. I am not sold on this being a guy you do that for. I can't say I'm crazy about many backs this year.

Then again, they might be Jim Brown and Walter Payton because I said that.

In other news, Justin Houston, Martez Wilson, and Dontay Moch are still on the board.

Second round results are under the jump.
