Some men are great players on the field. Others are great men off the field. Few are both. Larry Grantham is one of the third variety. Grantham was an original New York Titan. He played his entire thirteen year career with the franchise. He was a Titan and a Jet in the AFL and a Jet in the NFL. He was a five time AFL All Star and Second Team All Time AFL. He was on the only Jets team to ever win the Super Bowl. The Mississippi product produced enough on the field to make this list. He did more, though.
Back in 2009, I came across a post on The Jets Blog by my friend Brian Bassett talking about Grantham battling with cancer and financially in need to the point he was going to have to sell his Super Bowl ring. Word of Grantham's incredible good works came out like how he raised over a million dollars through the years to help people overcome alcoholism. Bassett's work touched off a viral effect on the internet that helped raise enough money for Grantham to keep his ring. Karma does not always work out so there is something poignant when a good person catches a break. That is what happened. A good man who dedicated himself to helping others got a hand when he was in need.
Having a man like Larry Grantham who continued to do such good in the community and build up such good will associated with the team after a fantastic playing career makes him an overwhelming success from the original 1960 AFL Draft.
