Jerricho Cotchery Has Back Surgery

New York Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery has undergone surgery on his back.

Jerricho Cotchery underwent back surgery last month for a nagging disc injury, a source confirmed with the Daily News this afternoon. The veteran wide receiver is expected to be ready for training camp in August assuming there’s a resolution to the labor impasse. He's currently rehabbing at a local facility near his New Jersey home.

It is good news that this sounds minor. It seems likely the Jets are going to need Cotchery to retake a bigger role with the team in 2011. He became something of an afterthought as a receiver with both Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes around in 2010. One of them might be out the door, though, and while there will be other guys available potentially at bargain prices, Cotchery is the internal option to step into the starting lineup. He should be up to that role.
