I don’t think a lot of people understand Tom Moore’s role. I'd like to try and clear it up, based on our beat writers and what the team has released. From 1998 to 2010, Moore served as the offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts. For the New York Jets, he serves as an offensive consultant.
What does this mean? It’s not some type of coordinator or even assistant coordinator, positions filled by Brian Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan. Instead, Moore works out of his home in Hilton Head, studying film from each week and making suggestions to Schottenheimer based on what he sees. He was on-site during training camp, however he now does his work remotely. Moore does not have a comprehensive role in formulating the game plan or working with the offense every day.
So, the question now is why I bring this up. Despite some suggestion otherwise, I would be very surprised if Moore is selected to be the offensive coordinator should Schottenheimer be fired. Moore is 72 and has made it clear that he is in a semi-retirement stage. It seems more likely that Callahan would be made acting offensive coordinator, since he both has a good track history with the team and as an offensive play caller, and also serves as the team’s assistant head coach under Rex Ryan. What do you think? Assuming Schotty is fired or his duties reduced, who would you like to see take over?
