Today, as expected,Laveranues Coles worked out with the Jets and signed a one-year contract. The deal is believed to be for the league minimum, and as a veteran, if Coles is on the opening day roster, he would make $855,000.
Rich Cimini and ESPN New York announced the signing, and shared a Coles' quote which put things into perspective, as far as what Coles' role on the team will be:
"It's an insurance policy for them," Coles said. "Those first four games are very important for the team to get where they want to go. It's an opportunity for me to come in and see what I can still do, but there's a slim chance I'll be there after four games. There's a good chance I'll get released; it depends on how things go. They were honest and open about it. It is what it is."
We discussed this yesterday here on GGN. Coles will likely be the WR3 in weeks 1-4 when Santonio Holmes is serving his suspension, but after Holmes returns he may not see any time. Coles even goes on to say he may actually be released in the above quote.
Unfortunately, number 87 is now occupied by David Clowney, so Coles will have to choose another number.
Coles had 43 catches for 514 yards and 5 TDs in 2009.
