The Jets left edge rushers like Everson Griffen and Ricky Sapp on the board. They passed on defensive line help like Cam Thomas. Instead, they decided to bolster the depth on the other side in the trenches by taking UMass product Vladimir Ducasse, an offensive lineman. It is an interesting pick.
There are a pair of players on the wrong side of 30 on the offensive line. Ducasse projects to play either inside at guard or outside at tackle. They also have gone through two straight seasons without an injury on the offensive line. The depth is untested. Nobody really knows what guys like Robert Turner, Wayne Hunter, or Matt Slauson can give.
He is a mountain of a man at 6'4" and 334 pounds. He is also very athletic for a guy of his size. He played at a Division 1-AA school and only began playing football his third year of high school so he may require some development, but he will have maybe the best teacher in the game for the technical aspects of the offensive line in Bill Callahan.
I think this was a good pick.
