Nobody can ever tell what Al Davis is going to do. GGN member mousie takes his best guess.
With the eighth pick in the Gang Green Nation Community Mock Draft, mousie picks for the Oakland Raiders...
Bruce Campbell
Here is a guy that fulfills the needs of all major parties in the Raiders. Davis gets a monster of a player with tons of talent that killed at the combine. Cable being a former O-line coach gets a guy with a lot of upside that can play either guard or tackle and the team gets to fill a major need. It is a gamble but tha draft is a gamble on its own.
My reaction:
This sounds too familiar for comfort for me. The Raiders take a Maryland product in the top ten with incredible athletic ability but raw in the technical aspects of the game about twenty slots before more pundits have him going. I don't think Campbell would be the disaster Darrius Heyward-Bey has been, but I also don't love this pick. Campbell again was inconsistent with his technique at Maryland and is an unfinished product. He only made 17 starts in college.
With the proper coaching, I think he would be a great pick for somebody. With a situation as dysfunctional as the Raiders have, I could see this turning into a bad situation. The coaching staff there hasn't done much with raw products like JaMarcus Russell and Heyward-Bey. If you want to give a coach like Bill Callahan a talent like this, I say all aboard. The Raiders? Not so much.
There are plenty of talented players who are more finished products. Picking this high, I want more of a sure thing like Bryan Bulaga of Iowa, even though he'll evoke his own unpleasant flashbacks for Raiders fans (Iowa product Robert Gallery).
I definitely could see Davis falling in love with the athletic ability so I think this is a reasonable guess into Oakland's thinking.
David's reaction:
I think you have the right position here, but I don't think it is the right player. He blew up his work outs, but I don't think his game film warrants him being a top 10 pick in the 2010 draft that is quite deep at OT. Personally if I were Al Davis, I would take Bruan Bulaga here. His performance in the Orange Bowl against Georgia Tech pretty much solidified him for me. He has quick feet. He is excellent opening holes and in pass protection, good pad level. As soon as Oakland get a QB who is worth protecting, Bulaga would be a great guy to protect him. Nothing against Campbell. He has a lot of talent, but in my opinion while Campbell had the better combine, Bulaga has the better game film. I'm taking the guy with the game film. No doubt the Raiders will continue to ignore the tackle position in favour of more 'attractive' skill position players, but unles they sure up that line they are going to continue to stink. Right position, wrong player.
What say you GGN?
