Shaun Ellis to Be Suspended for Opener

It seems likely the NFL will suspend Shaun Ellis for the Houston game for his drug-related arrest last year.

Veteran defensive end Shaun Ellis is expected to be suspended for the opener against the Houston Texans for his arrest on Nov. 29 in Morris County for possession of marijuana, according to two league officials with knowledge of the situation.

They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they're not authorized to speak publicly on the subject.

Ellis, who led the Jets with eight sacks last season, was stopped near the Jets' Florham Park complex on a Saturday morning for speeding and police detected the smell of marijuana in his car. He had possession of less than 50 grams, a disorderly person offense in New Jersey. He was also cited for driving without insurance.

I said a year ago it was good that disciplinary action would wait until 2009 because it wouldn't interfere with the stretch run. Had I known the way the team would finish with Ellis, that Calvin Pace would be suspended, and how thin the defensive line would be, I might have preferred to get this out of the way in 2008. It's time to pay the piper. Perhaps Kris Jenkins is so disruptive that I could play an effective end. Let's hope so for at least the first week because we're going to be seeing a lot of Howard Green and Mike Devito. I'm not sure that's a good thing.
