Rex Backs off QB Deadline

At the start of camp, Rex Ryan said he wanted to name a starting quarterback by the third preseason game. Now he's stepping back from that comment.

"I'm not going to say the deadline is this,'' Ryan said. "I've said all along that I want to make the decision as fast as possible, but it's going to be a prudent decision. It's going to be a decision that, when the timing is right to make the decision, we'll make it.

"When we feel confident that we definitely have the right guy we feel good about to go against Houston, we'll make that decision.''

Anybody else sense this is gamesmanship? The third preseason game is when starters play the longest. It's the best chance for the first team to get comfortable playing with each other. If you're starting a rookie quarterback, you definitely want him to get that entire half in with the first team so he gets game experience with his supporting cast. My guess is Mark Sanchez is named the starting quarterback after the Baltimore game.

What's your guess?
